Gibbous Moon observed on 4th December 2001

This picture of the waning gibbous Moon (3 days past full) was taken on the 4th December 2001 at around 23:00 GMT. The Moon is shown pretty much as it appeared in the sky, with its North Pole at the top of the picture near the terminator. The Moon was rising at this time and about due east. I have provided some more information about some of the lunar features.

The picture was taken at the prime focus of an Orion OMC-140 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope using Fujichrome Sensia 100 slide film. The colours in the scanned image have only been modified to fix the sky as black and to remove a slight magenta cast, otherwise they are as in the original. The contrast has been increased and some unsharp masking has been applied using Photoshop to enhance the detail. The observational details are given below:-
